Policing and European Studies

A UACES Collaborative Research Network since 2009.

The network has its own website which you should visit for up-to-date news and developments:: http://policingandeuropeanstudies.abertay.ac.uk/

The parameters of “policing” differ from one EU member state to another. In some it encompasses leading criminal investigations, in others it includes counter terrorism protection. Taking a wide definition of “policing” this research network will focus on the development of the cross border policing provisions which are increasingly being legislated for by the EU. Through a variety of opt in and opt out provisions the EU member states are engaging in a variable geometry approach to the EU policing provisions. The EFTA member sates are also highly involved in the EU policing provisions through their membership of the Schengen Convention 1990. In addition, EU international policing provisions have been developing apace, with highly developed relationships inter alia, with the USA.

It is intended that this network will bring together the variety of disciplines, national outlooks, and a mix of academic, policy maker, and practitioner perspectives, in order to feed into the continuing development of useable cross EU policing provisions, by the various forces operating throughout the EU.  Members intend to engage in not only research, but also knowledge transfer and exchange activities, through existing contacts, and any further contacts developed in the course of this research network, in order to develop and deepen relationships with police practitioner colleagues and national Departments of Justice and Home Affairs. It is also intended that this research networks will enhance the usability of the academic research in the context of EU cross border policing practice and policy development.

It is intended that members of this networks will comprise academics, practitioners and policy matters involved in “Policing and European Studies”, from across the EU, and from EU partner states.

This research network, based at the University of Abertay Dundee, is building on existing established links between academia and within UACES, and the national and international academic/ police practitioner research networks operating through the Scottish Institute of Policing Research (SIPR). This is a “strategic collaboration between twelve of Scotland’s universities and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland”, with investment from the Scottish Funding Council for further and higher education.
